The information here provides research resources available from the Osher NRC Research Review Committee and The LLI Review, a scholarly journal of the Osher National Resource Center published between 2006 and 2011.

Osher NRC Research Review Committee

There is potential for research within the OLLI network that both strengthens the programs and contributes to the national understanding of lifelong learning for older learners. Relevant research proposals should be submitted to These will then be forwarded to the Osher National Resource Center’s Research Review Panel.
Mission statement of the Osher NRC Research Review Committee

  • While not a substitute for an Institutional Review Board, the Research Review Committee serves as a resource to assess the quality and efficacy of prospective research projects that involve more than a single Osher Institute program as well as to encourage and support such research activity. It does this by reviewing project protocols, providing assistance in research design, being available for general consultation, and communicating findings to the OLLI network

The Osher NRC Research Review Committee members:

  • Michael Cheang, DrPH, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health Sciences and Assistant Director, Center on Aging at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. Volunteer at the Osher Institute at University of Hawai’i at Manoa.

  • Robert ‘Jack’ Hansen, Former Associate Director of the Florida Institute For Human and Machine Cognition. Co-author of Shaping a Life of Significance for Retirement. Member of OLLI at Furman University.

  • Kathleen Murphy, PhD, MSW, MLIS, Manager, Social and Behavioral IRB at Northwestern University.
  • Steve Thaxton, Executive Director of the National Resource Center for Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes at Northwestern University.

  • Barbara White, PhD, Executive Director of the Osher Institute at California State University Long Beach. She is also the director of the University’s Gerontology program and Center for Successful Aging.


The LLI Review

The LLI Review was an annual publication of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes’ National Resource Center. The mission of this peer-reviewed journal was to present original research and provide commentary on issues related to learning among persons over the age of fifty. Given the growth in the literature on lifelong learning, publication of the LLI Review ceased in 2011 and will no longer be produced.
