2015 National Conference for Osher Institutes

The 2015 National Conference held in Charlotte, NC between October 12 and 14, 2015, proved to be an ideal opportunity for OLLI leaders throughout the U.S. to learn, network and celebrate their common and important work. Two institute leaders from each Osher Institute were invited to attend – most often, this included one staff member and one volunteer leader from each of the 119 institutes. Participants experienced five plenary sessions; a choice of three breakout sessions, and a choice of two table topic discussions. There were also plentiful opportunities for networking, casual conversation and collaboration during breaks and meals. Additional activities to enrich body and soul were offered, including yoga, facilitated walks, and an inspiring film screening for the 258 attendees.

Plenary sessions included an orientation to concepts presented in the New York Times best-selling book, “Crucial Conversations”; a keynote address by National Public Radio correspondent Ina Jaffe, and a substantive panel discussion on fundraising and development for Osher Institutes. The extensive variety of content in breakout sessions and table discussions covered topics such as diversity, conflict resolution, strategic planning, registration systems, volunteerism, growth management, marketing, and successful curriculum development.  Particular thanks were repeatedly expressed to The Bernard Osher Foundation for their generous and long-standing underwriting of this 10th National Conference.

Through follow-up surveys, participants describe their conference experiences:

“I left so very inspired and with so much to share with my Board and Board committees”

“Loved the format, the venue, and the opportunity to get together with my fellow OLLI leaders”

“I really like how the individual OLLIs were recognized as well as their programs. Very educational and fun at
the same time”

“This format was just right, and the mix of topics provided a wide array of choices”

The Osher Institutes National Conference is a sesquiannual, multi-day meeting of Osher Institute staff and volunteer leaders. It has been held at geographically diverse locations throughout the country for more than a decade. Participation is by invitation only and is funded by The Bernard Osher Foundation. The Conference is organized by the National Resource Center for Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes in collaboration with more than 60 Osher Institute leaders.
